New York needs that plan, known as the Housing Compact, and hopefully Ms. Hochul can resurrect it over the coming year. In the coming days though, Ms. Hochul, Mr. Heastie and Ms. Stewart-Cousins can at least agree to policies that the governor has called “low-hanging fruit,” some of which could be achieved by executive order. Albany can also remove caps on the size of new residential buildings in New York City, paving the way for the higher density projects the city badly needs. New York City’s municipal government can do this, but it needs Mr. Adams’s help. At the Department of Homeless Services, more and better-trained workers are needed to help shelter residents apply for city housing vouchers, an onerous process that should be streamlined.

Feb 9 (Reuters) - A Republican New York state senator filed a lawsuit on Thursday seeking to force a Senate vote on Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul's pick to be the state's chief judge, after lawmakers blocked the nomination last month. State Senator Anthony Palumbo, who represents a Long Island district, said in a complaint filed in state court that New York's constitution requires the full 63-member Senate to vote on whether to confirm appellate judge Hector LaSalle to the post. Palumbo in the lawsuit said the state constitution, which requires the governor to appoint a chief judge "with the advice and consent of the Senate," was designed to prevent such an outcome. LaSalle is the first nominee for chief judge to be rejected by the Senate committee. New York's chief judge heads the seven-member Court of Appeals, which has the final say in interpreting state laws, and oversees the state's massive court system.

ALBANY, N.Y.— Kathy Hochul ‘s nominee for chief judge of New York’s highest court has divided her fellow Democrats and is shaping up to be her first major political test since being elected governor. The state Senate’s judiciary committee on Wednesday will consider Hector LaSalle to lead the New York State Court of Appeals. He currently runs a regional mid-level appellate court based in Brooklyn. More than a dozen Democrats in the chamber said they will vote against Justice LaSalle’s nomination to the chief judge role because of his previous rulings on workers’ rights and other matters, highlighting the increasingly political nature of state judicial appointments. Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins , a Democrat, has said the judge doesn’t have the support needed to be confirmed.
